Types of pearls

Due to the significant decline of oyster stocks in the 18th and 19th centuries, there were many attempts to cultivate oysters and pearls. In 1905, Kokichi Mikimoto succeeded in cultivating the first white, round saltwater pearl.

There are now five types of cultured pearls, all of which are available from Sinta and Nicolas.

Akoya pearls

The classics. 

They were worn and loved by our grandmothers, by Coco Chanel and Audrey Hepburn. Japan is the land of Akoyas and Kokichi Mikimoto the pioneer of pearl cultivation. White Akoya pearls of the highest quality, with a pink or blue shimmer, are still held in the highest esteem today.

Cortez Pearls

The rarest cultured pearls. 

These pearls are unsurpassed in colour intensity to this day and encompass the entire spectrum of the rainbow. Only very small quantities are
quantities are grown in the Gulf of Mexico.

South Sea Pearls

The queens among the pearls. 

They are the most sought-after and precious cultivated pearls. They come mainly from Australia, Indonesia and the Philippines and bear the colours white, gold and champagne.

Tahitian pearls

Charm and romance of French Polynesia. 

They owe their name to the largest French Polynesian island. Fascinating pearls of outstanding quality are cultivated in the lagoons and atolls around Tahiti. Their intense dark colours in combination with their shiny satin lustre delight jewellery lovers all over the world.

Freshwater pearls

Mainly bred in China. 

In China, too, you can find cultured pearls of the best quality, which can only be distinguished from saltwater pearls with a very trained eye. Renowned jewellery houses therefore incorporate beautiful white freshwater pearls into their wedding collections. Sinta & Nicolas also offers only the best quality freshwater pearls.
